Book Study:- Jude

Published on: 25 February 2024

This short but, to the point New Testament letter is written for those who are the ‘called, loved and kept’ by the lord Jesus Christ (Jude.1:1). It is written for their instruction and discernment. These folks were exhorted to contend for the faith that was once for all time handed down to the saints (Jude.1:2). What was the need for them to rise to such a fundamental challenge? It was all due to certain people whom, had crept into the life of the Church unnoticed and who were turning people from the grace of God in exchange for lies (Jude.1:3-4; Romans.1:25).

Jude describes some of the characteristics of those self deluded people among whom, are the grumblers, those having their own agenda, fault finders, those using flattering lips, self seekers, workers of division, worldly minded, those devoid of the Spirit (Jude.1:16-19). Without hesitation, Jude very clearly presents readers with a range of consequences which God has ordained for the end of such folks, using examples from Biblical history (Jude.1:5-15). Surely, not much has changed?

The really encouraging thing about Jude is, that we are not only given warning of such conditions but, we are also given the remedy. Clever philosophy has been aloud to creep into the churches. Things which the Bible openly describes as acts in need of repentance are deemed acceptable. The Gospel is often watered down to little more than a glorified social system. Yet there is an answer. We are called now to build ourselves up in our most holy faith. We are called to pray in the Spirit, live in the love of God and expectantly look forward to the return of Christ. In the meantime, to correct and exhort the doubters, snatch the unsaved from the fire but, under no circumstances, share in their sins (Jude.1:20-22).

A pretty clear message, I would say. With the added assurance that the Lord will keep us from stumbling and present us holy and with great joy in His presence at the end of all things. His being the glory and dominion forever and ever (Jude.1:24-25). I actually believe that Jude is about as clear as anyone could make the point. That if it’s not in the Word of God then, it isn’t of God. By their fruits you shall know them (Matthew.7:16). After studying Jude, I would encourage readers to filter everything they see through the lens of Scripture. Whereupon, that which cannot be shaken should be the only things deemed fit for purpose (Isaiah.1:25).
