The Nature of the Conflict

Published on: 13 February 2024

If we form, first of all a perspective of the spiritual climate, we may make a comparison of our contemporary world view with one held by the Psalmist, “The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honoured among men” (Psalm.12:8 NIV). Of course there are those whose world view is one of a beautiful thing to behold and who, rather naively believe that, man is inherently good (compare Romans.3:23). I would have to say, at this point, that the former have some perception of the conflict whilst the latter are unprepared for it.

Before reaching our own conclusions, we shall follow the Psalmist through a description of what could clearly be the structure of an article in any current newspaper. A self centred society characterised by great boasts by the ungodly, the use of flattering lips for the sake of expediency and a trend towards non commitment (Psalm.12:1-4). The Psalmist describes a society in which the righteous are afraid to speak out for fear of reprisal or, possible litigation. Taken to the extreme, in that scenario all that prevails are lips that curse instead of blessing.

One such case for study is given to us in Psalm.109:17-19. Recognised by students of the Bible as a prophetic description of Judas Iscariot, this short passage gives an insight into his character and indeed, to his state of mind. He loved cursing but the curse came upon him. He wore cursing as a garment but it entered into his bones. Curse, like a cloak, wrapped around him and he became tied like those in bondage. His end is known to us from our reading of Acts.1:18-20 where the Psalms are alluded to directly. If we follow through, we understand that nothing can stop the Lord from His plan or purpose, “They may curse, but You will bless.. (Psalm.109:28a NIV).

Yet for God’s purpose to be appropriated and lived into for the good of His people does involve that, we make a clear distinction between good and evil, right and wrong. To distinguish one from the other, an accurate appraisal can only be formed from Scripture. “In his pride the wicked does not seek Him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God” (Psalm.10:4 NIV). Indeed, the mouth of the wicked are full of curses lies and threats and yet they are convinced that they will not be called to account (Psalm.10:7, 13). Even so, “The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked and those who love violence His soul hates” (Psalm.11:5 NIV).

Hopefully, by now we are all on the same page and asking the question, ‘what then shall we do’. Writing to the Church of Ephesus, Paul gives a clear description of our warfare. I will highlight three points. Firstly, our conflict is not with flesh and blood (Ephesians.6:12). It is a stand against all that contradicts the Gospel, whether of man or, more directly of spiritual forces. Ultimately, it is a spiritual conflict. Secondly, we are to be prepared and active, dressed and ready for battle (Ephesians.6:13-17). We must put on the armour of God, being pro active instead of just pre active. Thirdly, we must pray in the Spirit on all occasions (Ephesians.6:18). Praying in the Spirit does not just involve speaking in tongues, it is praying in the will and purpose of God. His will confounds the world and its contrary voice. Notwithstanding, the contrary voice of the evil one.

Those are you tools and if you belong to Him, you are involved and a target whether you like it or not. Therefore, wage a good warfare until next time, unless the Lord returns first (2 Corinthians.10:3-5).
